biyn.org is built almost entirely on the King James Bible text itself, which is in the public domain. A handful of features on the Bible pages, though, draw on outside data and services to go beyond plain text — audio readings, Strong's numbers, word studies, and cross-references. This page names where each of those comes from.

The King James Version text

The KJV (1611) is in the public domain worldwide. The text used throughout this site's Bible section is this public-domain text; see Why we use the King James Version for why it was chosen over a modern, copyrighted translation.

Audio readings

The spoken-word audio in the Bible section's Hear tab streams directly from BibleStudyTools.com (Salem Web Network). biyn.org does not host or redistribute these recordings — the player links to their servers, so playback depends on their site being available. The KJV text is public domain, but a spoken recording of it is a separate, separately copyrighted work.

Strong's numbers & word alignment

The word-by-word Strong's numbers used in Dwell mode's "Word study" toggle and the reverse concordance come from CrossWire's KJV2003/KJV2006 project (crosswire.org), which hand-aligned every word of the King James text to its underlying Hebrew or Greek word and Strong's number. This is the same alignment most Bible study software and websites ultimately rely on for this feature.

Strong's glosses & grammar

The plain-English glosses and part-of-speech explanations shown alongside a word's Strong's number come from STEPBible-Data, produced by Tyndale House, Cambridge. Specifically:

• TBESH & TBESG (Translators Brief lexicon of Extended Strongs, Hebrew and Greek) — the Strong's-number-to-gloss lookup.
• TEGMC (Translators Expansion of Greek Morphology Codes) — decodes grammar codes like "V-AAI-3S" into plain English.

Cross-references

The "Cross references" panel in Dwell mode, which shows other passages connected to the verse you're reading, uses the cross-reference dataset from openbible.info, drawn primarily from the public-domain Treasury of Scripture Knowledge along with openbible.info's own crowd-sourced ratings of how strong each connection is. Licensed under CC BY.

Commentary

The "Commentary" panel in Dwell mode draws on three public-domain verse-by-verse commentaries, sourced as CrossWire SWORD project modules: Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Whole Bible, the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871), and the Scofield Reference Notes (1917 edition). All three are public domain; no attribution is legally required, but is given here anyway.

The same panel also offers Henry Morris's and William MacDonald's commentaries as outbound links rather than hosted text, since both are still under copyright. Selecting either one links out to the copyright holder's own site: Henry Morris's notes (from the Henry Morris Study Bible) at icr.org, copyright the Institute for Creation Research; William MacDonald's Believer's Bible Commentary at sermonindex.net, copyright Thomas Nelson/HarperCollins Christian Publishing.

International translations

Pages under /intl/ translate this site's own commentary into each language, but never machine-translate Scripture itself — every quoted verse is instead drawn from an existing, established Bible translation in that language, quoted verbatim. Most of these are in the public domain, and the rest are noted below. The translation cited is consistent within a given language:
