Remarriage: why not to do it?Marriage is a covenantMarriage is a covenant, for life, that is not to be dissolved by man. Please consider Jesus' teaching in Mathew 19: ``The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be ONE FLESH? Wherefore they are NO MORE TWAIN, but ONE FLESH. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.'' This was Jesus talking to the Pharisees, who were under the law. Question: what are we to do with the law? Please see The Divorce Exception for more on this passage.
``When thou shalt vow a vow unto the Lord thy God,
thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.'' Deuteronomy 23:21 When we die, we will give account of ourselves before God. Jesus said for every idle word we will give account at the day of judgment (Matthew 12:36). We should live our lives to please Him.
``Art thou bound unto a wife?
Seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? Seek not a wife.'' 1 Corinthians 7:27 In most cases, remarriage is adulterous
``Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another,
COMMITETH ADULTERY: and whosoever marrieth her that is putteth away from her husband COMMITETH ADULTERY.'' Luke 16:18 ``Yet ye say, wherefore? Because the Lord hath been a witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth . For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.''
``For this cause shall a man leave father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife: and they two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asundar.'' Matthew 19:5-6 Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, to take up our cross daily and follow Him. To the divorced, remaining unmarried may be the cross that Jesus is asking us to take up.
``And he said to them all,
If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.'' Luke 9:23 Related Articles
