atheists think they have it all figured out, except their entire logic is
based on the fact that total truth is based on how they experience the
world through sensual perception and reason. If they were to accept
the fact that there could be more to this life than just can be
described by sensual perception and reason, they would realize that
total truth is equal to natural truths in addition to divine truths.
This means that each of us can have a spiritual sense in which we can
know that God exists, but someone that has never experienced that
would never know that.
And they might think it is absurd to think that we could have a spiritual sense. But, a spiritual sense explains the fact that we have psychics, ouija boards, etc. The fact is, they cannot prove diddly squat about the spiritual world with their science, logic, and all the "infinite" wisdom they think they have.
And I might also note that if you study near-death experiences, in almost every case people say they meet someone most people call God. And it is always a life changing experience where they come back thinking the most important thing in this life is love. And God is love.

You're right, I'm scared, and my fear does feed my belief.
I could either have the opinion that I have everything figured out and I have a logical explanation of everything (which is only valid for our vantage point as humans on this earth)
-or- that I don't have everything figured out in which case I look for something that transcends this world.
One thing that transcends this world is the life of Jesus. And He did exist; there is no serious historian that would doubt this. So how did Jesus make such a profound impressionation on the world even today? After all, He is the considered the most influential, and most written about person of all times. So, why is time based on Jesus? Why do we celebrate two holidays a year in honor of Him? Just because He went around claiming He was God. If He was a liar, He sure did fool alot of people. And if He was a liar, He must have been a liar with the highest of all morals.
Unless someone else has a better explanation of what awaits us after this life, I'm sticking with my best options.

-who is keeping their life focused on that which transcends the world?
One test you can try, go and ask almost any Christian (I can't be responsible for those who claim to be Christians but do not really trust and obey God) how his or her life has changed as a result of becoming a Christian.
